Although the temperatures have been in the upper 80s with 80-90% humidity, we have been in the throes of all the typical December / Christmastime activity. Since we failed to bring any sort of Christmas decoration from Oregon, we have made do with buying a small tree and ornaments, and making homemade decorations for the apartment. Wesley was very excited about the tree decoration process this year. He took a lot of pride in hanging the ornaments, although he didn't quite get the concept of spreading them around the entire tree. He found his favorite spot at the bottom of the tree and chose to focus on making that section "beautiful".
Calvin wrapped up his semester at school last week and is now on a six week break. The last few days of school he had a field day, a Christmas singing concert, and a Christmas party. I was able to help out with the field day and the party and it truly was a great time for the kids. Calvin's favorite field day activity was the long jump, although he excelled at the softball pitch event where he threw the farthest of the kindergartners (made his daddy proud!). The singing concert consisted of kids in grades K-4 and was very enjoyable. Calvin worked hard practicing and was proud of his performance. A clip can be found on youtube:
The boys have kicked off the holiday break with lots of Star Wars play and more Christmas crafts. We spent one morning creating Santa's sleigh and of course, Rudolph. The boys initially took turns being Santa until Calvin convinced Wesley that he should be an elf. Wesley happily obliged and the boys spent quite a bit of time pretending to fly around and dropping toys out of the sleigh.
Without the cold weather and commercialism everywhere you turn, it hasn't quite felt like December to me. But if I put on some Christmas music, make a cup of tea, and crank up the air conditioner, I can almost simulate it. Honestly though, the holiday feeling we are missing most is the happiness of spending time with our friends and family.
